I met him on Tinder. We struck up an easy conversation and made plans to meet in person. First my kids got the flu. Then I had to work late. Shit happens is the term we used to describe it. I thought he seemed a little annoyed that my life was not cooperating. I was sure I wouldn't hear from him again. At the last minute he messaged and asked me if I would like to go on the Volksmarch with him. A six mile hike up to the face of the Crazy Horse memorial. I am not outdoorsy. I can't really remember ever hiking. But I had recently lost 106 pounds and I felt like I could conquer the world. So without thinking I said yes. When I told my friend Heather she said that he might get the impression that I was athletic or something that I might be misleading him. I started to have a lot of doubts. I gave him a call to let him know I am slow and clumsy. He explained that he had some physical limitations too and the point was just to have fun. We could go at our own pace and take our time. This set my mind at ease. Now what to wear? Jeans would be to hot. No way I'm showing off these old lady legs on the first date. Why I chose the outfit that I did is a mystery to me. Mint green sweat pants and a neon yellow tee shirt. My friend Kendra came over to babysit the kids and the first thing she said was "what the hell are you wearing?" Too late to change he pulled up in front of the house and I half skipped out to meet him. We talked easily on the way up to Hill City. He asked me exactly how many children I had. I told him I had 5 beautiful children and they were the light of my life. His face fell. I could tell it was a deal breaker. "Wow. You really are super mom" He said." I have one grown daughter and I am not interested in raising children again. I cant even imagine how you do what you do" We got to Crazy Horse and set off on our hike. My outfit did not come with pockets so I asked him to hold my phone. We were each given a card to be stamped at every pit stop. At the end a mystery word would be revealed.
